What are IT Managed Services?

IT Managed Services is a new business model where an IT service provider combines flat-rate, unlimited IT support for a monthly fixed fee with the proactive monitoring of IT workstations and infrastructure. Managed Service Providers (MSPs) essentially become a full-time IT department for their clients at a drastically reduced rate. No more worrying about how many hours are spent on a particular issue or if routine maintenance needs to be performed. It’s all covered in a single monthly fee.

MSPs typically have several program levels available. From the Proactive Support model to the Full Service model, most organizations have the ability to provide the level of support that fits your technology needs and budget constraints.

Many MSPs will initially provide a Network Assessment to determine your current technology environment and evaluate your existing support structure. With that information, they will provide a recommended monthly service plan.

What services are typically included in a Managed Services Agreement?

Each MSP will create their own service levels and each will have its own offerings within that level. It is important to review each service level and make certain it fits your company’s needs. Here are some of the most common services provided in a Managed Services agreement:

  • Managed Servers
    • 24×7 Advanced Performance Monitoring
    • Server Configuration Management
    • Key Application Maintenance
    • Microsoft and 3rd Party Patch Management
    • Real Time Server Optimization
    • Scheduled Preventative Maintenance
  • Managed Workstation

    • Unlimited Network, End-user and Network Support
  • Managed Security

Again, it should be stressed that not all organizations will need all of these services. A network assessment is necessary to determine your current infrastructure situation and determine which services are right for your company.
